VRBO is choosing your cover photo for you.

VRBO now uses AI to pick your main listing photo. They buried the notice in one July email, so most hosts have no idea it is even happening. Here is that email, and the opt out link inside it.

This is the email VRBO sent on July 9.

Subject line: VRBO is enhancing listing images with AI. Read it and you would think it was a routine product update. The opt out is the very last line, under everything else.

That last line is the whole point. It reads: “If you prefer not to participate, you can opt out here.” That link opens VRBO’s opt out form, which is https://expediaxm.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6heINmXaSAZ9nQG

Here is what the AI chose for our lakefront property:

What guests actually saw in search

Guests searching for a place on the lake saw an arcade basketball game instead of the cover photo we chose. You will not see any of this logged into your own account. Your dashboard looks perfect while the search page shows something else entirely.

Steps to take:

  1. Open your listing in an incognito window and compare it to the cover photo you chose.
  2. Submit the opt out form above. It works whether or not you received VRBO’s email.
  3. Watch for the confirmation. VRBO told us it takes up to seven business days to be removed.

One thing to save you time: calling owner support did not work for us. They could not turn it off, but instead just escalated it, and gave us a case number.
